The United Nations (UN) has warned that Israeli settlements could endanger the security of the Jewish State as it tries to bolster settlements in the West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this year that an end to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process with a two-state solution was now impossible. He said that only a “real peace” based on a lasting Israeli-Palestinian deal could help the United States to secure the “final status” of the West Bank settlement enterprise.
Now, at the U.N. security council, it is reported that the U.N. wants Israel to stop expanding its West Bank settlement blocs and to “make a unilateral commitment” to permanently remove large numbers of its settlers from the West Bank. It has also called for Israel to halt settlement expansion outside the pre-1967 lines.
Under international law, Israel has “no legal justification” to expand its settlement activity in the West Bank. If Israel was to stop and start to settle in areas which were claimed by the Palestinian refugees after the Six- Day war of 1967, for example, it would be illegal under international law, according to the U.N.
But despite the United Nations’ calls, the Israeli government has continued expanding in territory that Palestinians claim as their future state, a report from the Guardian said.
“The issue is not really going to be addressed at the international level,” Jonathan Arkush, head of the Peace Now campaign, told the Guardian. “You have to go above the world body’s political and administrative machinery.
“This is the key issue: when you have a state that was created in 1948, the U.N. has an obligation to recognise that state because the Palestinians have always claimed it,” Arkush added. “And it is up to Israel to follow through on this obligation.”
