The best way to draw him is by using him as a metaphor when you’re drawing him. It helps to just keep drawing him and the story you’re trying to tell starts to come together. Then you can start exploring what you’d like to do next.
What was it like to work with Jack Kirby on the Fantastic Four?
It was fun, the guy’s the greatest comic book artist of all time, man. That was the ultimate dream come true, just a couple of hours a day, and getting to see what Kirby’s doing on a huge scale — to work with this kind of guy as an artist in his own world, just working in the same room, working with the same writer, the same assistants. It’s just everything in a nutshell: it’s such an exhilarating thing to see what someone can do when they’re given all the tools at their disposal. I’d just love to do a book with him anytime, but the thing is, he’s not going to let anyone tell him what to do. He never will. He’s just someone who does things his way and it’s something for him to be celebrated for and to look back on and find what he was doing on the most personal level that night when you’re working with him. He was just doing what he does.
What does Marvel Comics Mean to you?
It’s an incredible institution with extraordinary characters and brilliant storylines, people I respect. The thing I find the most amazing about comic books is that they hold your hand. There are so many things that will inspire and inspire you when you’re reading or when you see the writing on the page. They just keep you on your toes. The fact that these people are so much fun and they have such a big fanbase is great, to me, it really makes you care about characters. You don’t know your readers and what you’re going to be like when you get into the story, so reading those stories makes you want to keep going, to keep following up. Then you’re in the world and you’re living in these worlds and you’re just so enthralled to stay with the characters and to keep talking to everybody involved.
What kind of books or characters did you enjoy reading when you were a kid?
I’m looking at comics and I would read anything with the letters ‘C’ on the front and I love the characters and that aspect of it. But I don’t really enjoy the stories themselves. I’d like to
