It comes down to drawing them properly. You need their shape, and then you need the colour of their lips. If they have more than one colour, it helps. I try and make the lips as big as you can draw them. As the drawing becomes closer to reality, I get more precise and less messy.
That was a lot of information. You’ve said in the past that a lot of that information came from reading.
I’m not a super fan of research, I love to make up stuff and it makes me feel like a genius because I have no scientific background (laughs). If I would have looked up something on the internet, it probably wouldn’t have been the answer in the end. I think a lot of it was just watching YouTube videos and having someone tell me that’s how to draw it. As it’s a natural progression of making up my own experiences.
In your comics’ history there have been plenty of twists, turns, and changes in characters and whatnot. How do you work that out as a graphic designer?
The truth is, I don’t know if I can answer that question. I’m not much of a storyteller (laughs). I do have a pretty good sense of when something is going to go wrong. I’ve written stuff about that in the past. It could be that I’ve written something that’s not really fun for the artist to do at that point in time. But I know that at some point it probably would have been fun to do something else. But it would have got to the end of its lifespan before I would have said, “Fuck it,” and just stopped. So I don’t know if that’s how it works. If it would have been super fun to write a story that’s completely off-colour and does not have the story end in any way where you feel like, “Wow! That was fun!” It just never happened that way, so there’s really nothing to say.
It seems like in this current era of comic book design and production, some creators are creating designs that are more complex than the standard, simple drawings. You have a pretty clear definition for what comics look like and what works, but sometimes there are more artistic elements than what you might expect based on those guidelines.
Yeah, sometimes I’m like, ‘I don’t think we should do this, I don’t think that’s really what comics are about’, and then someone comes
