Can short films make money? – Making A Short Film – Start To Finish

Do they make it to commercial distribution?

If you can’t answer these questions, and you can’t put together an answer to them, you have no business being in the business.

There is no good reason, other than the whims of human beings and other people’s egos that a director should be in business. Any director is lucky if he or she’s hired and continues to live after he or she gets paid, because that often means they aren’t being taken seriously. And any other person who has a long-term vision does not need to get paid. (When a studio thinks I’ve done one movie, we take that seriously. I’m happy if another movie is done, and I’ll make sure that other people are paid for their work. But I don’t think I’m in a position to take much of the blame for things that I believe are my own fault.)

If you’re just going to take advantage of your ability to break the bank and make short films — it can be done. (Don’t do that.) It only takes a few minutes to make a movie, and you have a good opportunity to get noticed.

If you can’t do that, you’re not in a business. It’s not a lot of work. If you can’t tell me how to run my own show or what we’re doing here, I don’t work for you. If you don’t follow your own ideas — and I hope you never do this — you won’t survive.

And if you don’t think you will, don’t try to make what I make.

The last thing I want is for somebody to go in and say, “I’ve never got a script, and I don’t care. If you want to come in and read my script or see my movie, you’re welcome to do so.”

I’d love for you to put that in writing and make it happen.

If you have no direction to go in and no idea how you’re going to make a movie, you cannot be in the business of creating and distributing films.

You are the business, and you’re going to have to do it on your own.

And that’s the end of it.

It’s not in the movies. It’s not in the studio. It’s not in the show. It is the end of it, and it’s never
