Do I need a degree to be a filmmaker? – Funny Quotes About Filmmaking Process Outline

Well, if you want to be a filmmaker you need a good education, and some kind of experience before you apply to an agency to get your foot in the door. I don’t see filmmakers coming from one school to another. The most important education you need is the education you gain in the field you want to be in.

My experience with schools has always been bad. Most of my schooling was taken for granted; I was taught at every turn that the things I learned were not relevant because you already knew “this”. They did not teach me how to read, how to read an article, what I need to know to be successful. My experience has always been that every single school I went to was a failure.

What I do know is, if you know your stuff, you can make it in filmmaking if you put the work in to get it right, and stay true to your roots.

What is your favorite thing about being a cinematographer?

The thing that I like most about being a cinematographer is that I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about other jobs, I spend a lot of time worrying about making the right cinematography, because if I didn’t, I would not be doing this.

What is the first question you ask a prospective cinematographer when you talk to them about making a new feature film?

If you just want to shoot your film or if you only want to shoot your film when you get money from a distributor, then the first thing they ask you is “how much are you charging?”. It is the number one question to a new cinematographer. You want to know how much, you want to know about your time, how much you have budget for? When you ask this, it’s important to understand how much your project is on budget, because if you aren’t, it’s very easy for you to screw up, and get the wrong project.

What is the most important piece of learning you got from working with a director and cinematographer together?

You have to ask for their blessing before shooting anything. If you didn’t ask first for the director’s blessing, who would? And don’t let anyone make your shooting experience on a job different from what you should be getting. The most important thing is to put your team in their place. If you take care of them, their team knows it and you won’t have to worry about them screwing up.
