Do you need a college degree to be a filmmaker? – Filmmaking Quotes Steven Spielberg

Thirty Years of Clamshell Computing - Slashdot

Yes. And it has nothing to do with where you grew up in the US or where you go to school. It’s just that the demand for film or TV or online movies is so great now. I think you’re going to see a lot more of the same thing that I witnessed in my late 20s. People say that the work is all subjective, but really, there are few things more subjective than deciding whether to make a film or a TV series. I think those who make good art do it because they believe they need to make it, and I suspect that’s happening with a lot of people today.

In the US, most directors are under 40, which makes you look really young. But the film industry is just changing so quickly, that even people like you can become directors when they are 40.

Yeah, that happens often in my profession, and many filmmakers do it. And I think it’s important to point out that in an industry where you can’t really tell, many young men take jobs as janitors at the film festivals so they can focus more energy on developing their craft. Most companies want young people because younger is better. But in the end, all of our jobs, or the jobs of my peers, all of our careers, I’ll say that we’re all doing it because we believe it’s important.

Did that mean you had to give up your acting career to keep making movies?

Yeah. I’ve always had an acting career because I’m an artist, and we all know that the more you invest in yourself, the more you develop as a person. Not only did I have a lot of fun making films in my 20s, but it allowed me to develop some of my strengths as an artist at a young age. It was a lot of fun and it had its ups and downs. And that is part of the joy of it, because you get to explore yourself and see who you are in the process.

I think that we will see a lot more of that in our lives. I can imagine the day when actors can actually do it themselves without an agent just because they want to, and it’s a big thing for the future.

The film industry in the US is really interesting because you are making movies and TV shows for a pretty open market and people can see all kinds of things, but you are in a bubble of that market. So many American film and TV directors are from Hollywood, is that surprising?
