How do you become a filmmaker? – The Art Of Documentary Filmmaking Workshops Boston

It’s a lot of work. You have to sit for hours, watch a lot of movies, watch a lot of TV shows, watch a lot of tutorials, just to learn filmmaking. That’s very expensive.

If you just sit there and watch something for 30 years, the only people that will watch you are people that are rich or famous, so that’s probably the worst decision you can make. But there’s so much out there, even if you get to go to an academy, you’ll still have to spend a lot of money in order to get into the right place, even if you go to an academy.

What do you love and hate about filmmaking?

I love when I take a break from films, because it’s always my favorite time of year, to go out to dinner. I love eating out. I was in Australia and I ate a lot of pizza while I was there — I ate a lot of pizza.

I also, as much as you have to do it in order to get a job, because the pay is not very good there. They are not paying your bills, and it becomes very difficult, very boring, to do something once a week, maybe. Sometimes, if you take a break, you think, “Oh, I’ve worked my ass off for this job for the past 5 months.” But because there are so many other opportunities, you think, “Yeah, this is a waste of time, and I’ll just go back to it the next day.”

I love taking long breaks. When I make a film, I usually take a long break between films. That’s the whole reason. I’m not really into working in the city, so I like taking time off so I can just do something that isn’t as glamorous, that’s not as important, and that’ll work at a small studio. So you can only do it once, so you have that downtime. And if you take a holiday, I can’t take a holiday, because I’m going to be looking for a job. What if you can’t find a job, and you have to make $200,000 per year in just the film? What if every film you’re making is going to lose money, and you’ve spent so much money? You don’t know which is which, because you’re not on a business visa.

And you’re just constantly thinking about it: “I wonder if my next film sucks.”
