Well, according to the Entertainment Weekly’s “Making Movies” list, it varies from $1.75 million to $3.5 million for the best-seller lists. I’m guessing that the $3.5 million number is the new “best book” list.
A few caveats. First, I have no idea why the current list is being cited as a “best seller list.” The “best book” figure is the same regardless of whether a writer or producer is listed on it.
Second, it’s important to note that each list has been updated. Here’s what I said before, on the new list: “This article was updated on Wednesday, July 19, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. EDT.”
Third, this list is very likely going to vary more than other lists, and likely depending in part on which people are included. But here, for instance, would be a different list if George Clooney were on it — just without the movie.
Fourth, each list is based on sales to bookstores, not the retail box office. That’s why there are no sales figures listed. When I write about the biggest box office drops and rises, those numbers come from the data at the end of the article, not the sales figures in this article
The fifth, perhaps the biggest, caveat is that you can’t read a list without knowing the first writer. That’s why when I say you should read “Million Dollar Arm,” it’s with an asterisk beside it. But in the case of this list, you must. I’m guessing this was a good starting point — one that we’re about to change — but it may well be that there’s a different starting point for each list.
Also, a note about the source: The lists I’ve highlighted are, in most cases, the book lists for those years. But there were a handful of books that had to be included in the book lists because their first author also was on this list, and those titles will appear in these new lists. There may be more instances of this, though.
