This collection collects issue #1-14 of the main X-Men Battle of the Atom comic book series – all of which deal with the origin of the Atom.

The first issue in the comics centers on Battleworld, a multiversal war between all of the mutant species of existence, with two sides in contention, the Avengers of Earth and the X-Men of Earth, with the latter being known as the X-Men. It’s an exciting, and, in a sense, a confusing, battle. The Avengers team up with the Avengers to defeat the X-Men, and the original original Jean Grey team ups with their new leader Nightcrawler. This is all very confusing, and has led to some confusion among fans about what exactly is going on in the comic – as well as confusion for some fans on other websites, including Bleeding Cool.com, the New York Times, and the US Web site.
The story is based on the X-Men: Genesis storyline, during which Professor X (Professor Charles Xavier) and Magneto (Magneto is not actually Magneto, but his brother Erik, aka Cyclops) tried to create a new world, and the only ones who would not give it to them are the X-Men and the Avengers, and in the end the original X-Men lost, as well as both the X-Men and the Avengers.
This event is featured in the Battleworld timeline of the X-Men, the Ultimate X-Men, and the New Mutants.
