The International Students and Scholars Association (ISSA) is part of the University of California system, a public research university that also offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. The ISSA offers five film and media studies courses, including film studies: Film and Media Production, Visual Media and Design, Media Production and Design, Digital Media and Digital Filmmaking, and Visual Studies of the Digital World. When he was a teenager in the mid-70s, in the midst of his teenage years in California, he met one of his earliest and best friends, a young man named Mikey DeMarco, in Westwood. They met when they were teenagers and later became friends, and Mikey’s friends helped him to figure out what music made him tick.
A few short years ago, he had an album out with the band Barenaked Ladies, “The Man,” but after that, he didn’t make any more records. That’s when the friend Mikey went to make a record with him. “That was a real turning point for me.”
He remembers thinking, “Wow, I don’t know if it’s going to stick. It’s going to sound kind of lame, I don’t know if it’s going to be listened to, and I think I’ve really put it down.”
“Like, you’ve got to really do something. But I’ve had so many experiences with that: you just have to wait it out. The record is out now, and it’s out really well. People love it. It’s a great example of, I have a chance to make a record, and I take it. And hopefully it’s not like I was 20 years ago. I mean, I’m still young and in love and everything, but I’m at least a little bit wiser than I was back then; I guess it’s better.”
If he can make a record that resonates among listeners, Mikey hopes that he’ll be able to make a name for himself as a rapper/singer.
