What is a freelance filmmaker? – Best Equipment For Filmmaking On A Budget

We’re not sure exactly what you mean by a freelancer (or even freelighter), so it’s really up to you to decide. There are a lot of misconceptions out there right now about what a freelancer is, who they are and how they get paid.

“What is the difference between a consultant, a freelancer and an independent filmmaker?” asks The Freelancer’s Handbook.

In short, a consultant is someone who advises and teaches you how to do your job, usually for a fee. They use their knowledge of the industry and expertise to help you become the best you possible can be in your field. If you want to know more about this, check out The Freelancer’s Handbook for a list of other articles to check out.

“Does the film industry pay a fee to an independent filmmaker?”

When doing a documentary, you could be considered as an independent filmmaker if you make a project that will go on air and that has a TV show attached. The fee for an independent filmmaker is often less than what the average film-maker gets.

What are many freelance filmmakers paid to do?

There are a couple of things I wish I had known about the industry before I became a freelancer. I wish I knew more about some of the types or methods of payment I can expect.

There are a handful of freelance filmmakers who make projects that are paid per sequence. This works quite well for them due to the length of the project they work on and the amount of material they have been working on – in some cases over a 20 piece set. Some examples you might see in the media include:

Packing the film for the shoot

Filming the scenes in the trailer of the film, which might consist of anywhere from 500 to 2,000 scenes

Filming the scene you just shot

Working on the post production of the film, from creating a teaser and promo, to editing – all in a few hours

The list can go on and on if you want to learn more about these freelance film-makers. Many of them also go on to offer you a “catered tour” package and you can pick and choose from films they shoot if you like, so you don’t end up too far from the action.

Another thing I wish I knew is how and when to start earning money in the film-making industry and what is the best method to make the most money. For myself, I had
