In a few years you’ll find that you’ve actually mastered the art of picking out the notes of an overdriving chord.
The chord has now become something very concrete; it’s gone from a sound, a note, or a feel to a shape or a sound or a note that can be used. The notes of an F chord can now be used a ton, or a ton of different ways. The note can be picked off the chord in a way that leads you into playing the next F chord.
When you have a chord that you can pick out by playing the note up rather than the note down, there’s now the concept of a F shape, which is an interesting concept; you’re still using notes, but they’re being changed through a different set of parameters.
The F shape makes sense as an expressive shape because it gives you multiple ways to play the notes of another chord. You can apply notes to the other chords; so, you can get different notes in the same manner that you would use the notes of a C shape on a bass.
Because you’re making these multiple ways that you can apply notes, it makes sense that you can go to many different notes and still be able to produce a clear message using all 10 notes.
Then you get to playing multiple overdriven chords; those become a lot easier to do, because now you’re using only one chord, you don’t have to use multiple chords.
Then I want you to understand a couple of important concepts; first of all, that the chord concept is a really critical concept, because any time you’re thinking of picking out notes of an overdriving chord, you’re thinking about that chord.
You can’t just think of picking up notes of a major sixth, or of a minor sixth, right? You’ve got to think up all sorts of other shapes, shapes that would correspond to that chord.
