I mean, would you take a guitar out of the garage and give it a tune up? Or would you be an amateur?
I was going through a lot of changes with this guitar and there are so many things that didn’t gel and sometimes I wanted to have a guitar that sounded so ’70s that it would never ever sound good again. I was also getting too old to take it to the store and get a tune up on it. We thought the Fender Deluxe-B would be a perfect match. [Laughs] I couldn’t believe it when we got it. I remember I was working on it out a lot in the garage. It was in a black leather case, so it would get all dusty. But it was still the most beautiful guitar I’d ever seen. I don’t know if it was too many records or too many different sounds, but it was just the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. That was my goal, to put a guitar out there that could never be good again.
And when I was telling you this story, you said that you used to have an epiphany that you went through with that guitar?
I’ve always been a big fan of that guitar. [laughs] I was so lucky to have it. Even though I was kind of into a lot of different things at the time, I did all the old things like acoustic, pedal steel, string bass, jazz, jazz fusion. The Fender was very instrumental, very guitar-like, very clean. I tried to capture the sound of those songs.
That was your first record with The Killers?
That would be the very first record that I had a real grasp on, and not only a grasp on, but a passion for. I could understand the difference. I understand the power, but I was also able to relate to the emotional parts at the same time. I could relate to the emotional nature of the music, but also had this passion for it that I would put to a tune.
So, when you went into the studio for this album, was this the first time you were actually playing in an acoustic setting?
Yeah. We were having another recording session in a studio in New York [at] the Sunset Tower loft I was living in at the time at 9:30 in the morning. I got up the day before. I got to the studios at 7:30 [p.m. Saturday]. I don’t know why I brought
