In a nutshell, there are 5 basic guitar chords: 1. G#m, 2. Ab7, 3. Fmaj7, 4. Am7, 5. Chorale (1st in a scale). But I will go ahead and give you 5 more basic guitar chords to learn.
You have probably seen these notes listed on the left hand side of your fretboard in the following scale.
A – G – C – D – E – F# – G# – B – A – Am/Bm – Dm7 – F#maj7
Let’s look at those 5 chord sounds.
G – D – E – F# – B – A
D#m7 – F#maj7 – A – Am7 – Bm7 – Ab7
C – Dm7 – F#maj7 – C – Eb7 – Dm7 – Fm7
C#m7 – F#maj7 – Emm7 – Abm7 – B7 – Am7 – Em7
(C:7 in minor, F:6 in major, G#:6 in diminished, and a:6 in major, Bb:5 in minor.)
So let’s do the other two notes in the scales.
A – F#m – G – Ab
D# – Em – Gm
E – A
D – G – Abm
E – A – E
D#b7 – F#maj7 – Chorus (1st in a scale)
And we’ll do the same with the same chords on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings.
