Well I won’t tell you! A lot of people are going to say ‘it’s the most important thing’, and I’m like … Well that makes sense, but that hasn’t happened. I have done this whole guitar journey, which is kind of a journey but more of an adventure than a career.
You did it in four years.
I’ve been doing this guitar thing, and I always feel like going on and on forever, but that’s kind of boring.
I’m sure you’ve come a long way from a guy who played in a bunch of punk bands and you’re just now starting to show off your chops on the big stage.
Yeah, that’s the weird part. That’s why I always want to take a break for a while. One of the best things about this band, the first time we did ‘Mama Said Knock Youout’ I was like, ‘Okay I got a job! Okay, I can do all this.’ I was like, no, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to change the name of this thing and I’m going to be cool and now I’m going to play guitar! That’s what you were doing before.’
It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.
So you didn’t feel this was for you?
No, that’s a hard one because I really enjoyed the beginning, when we’d do ‘The Man Has No Name’ and play the whole album through just drums, and just keep going. I never saw anything as boring in music as playing an hour and three forty at a time, and it didn’t have any negative feelings for me. I just enjoyed it. Then for most of the album, it’s my drumming, my keyboard music, so I don’t like those types of things. I don’t like doing that for myself.
But the last record, even when you got back on it, it felt kind of… The drums are so good in this one. That’s the thing that always stuck with me and it never happened again. And with your songwriting, it’s kind of like going back to some of the songs from the first records.
I don’t know how many people can relate to that. When I was trying to write a lot of new songs, I’d be thinking stuff like ‘I’m gonna write this piece of shit!
