The black line on our screen is a simple Photoshop effect called a “stroke”. It makes the black circle behind a frame of a picture black. This is not actually an effect; there are other ways to achieve this effect, but this is the simplest. It’s not necessary to use a black layer, but is a good practice to create it when you are working for black and white. We’ll use the Stroke Stroke Stroke for our image. To create this effect, first you need to have the black square (shown below) selected in the Layers palette and set the Stroke to Soft Black. Then use the Rectangle Tool (M) to make a black “circle” around that square. Then apply the Stroke Stroke and we’re done. Now you can simply use the Stroke Stroke effect.

The first major paper on ocean-albedo change in the Southern Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean showed that during the past 200 years, the South Pacific subtropical gyre is warming at a rate faster than the Atlantic–North Pacific gyre (AO–NAG) in the Southern Hemisphere. This means that if warming continues at the current rate, by the end of the century, up to one-third of the oceans in the South Pacific may be warming. The study was led by Sangeeta Ramaswamy and colleagues of the NASA/JPL Ocean Remote Sensing Program.
An analysis of satellite data showed an increase of 0–2 degrees Celsius in the area of the South Pacific subtropical gyre over the last decade. This change could make the subtropical gyre slightly less sensitive to the solar radiation–driven warming over the past decade than it would have been without such an increase.
