Every video I make is my most expensive video, but that’s because I need to do things just right. I have to think big things through to bring the most out in every shot like making the light, the camera angles, the lighting. And for every shot there is a story underneath it.
What kind of equipment do you have on film?
Camera, camera, camera, it goes on your belt. It’s one of the most beautiful cameras I’ve ever seen. It costs about $4,000 — it’s the one in the new X-Pro2, but it’s really easy to use. It’s amazing. It gets really great photos. And it’s not really about having to buy anything other than a camera.
How would you describe your style?
It can be a bit chaotic. It can be kind of jazzy. It’s not the worst of it.
What’s one piece of gear that’s changed the most for you?
I think the X-Cinema is probably my most expensive piece of equipment. It’s not quite as flashy as the X-Pro, but it is the culmination of everything I’ve had to do to really create these shots.
What is the hardest part of shooting a music video?
What they say, the hardest part is the preparation. You have to be super organized, which is something not everyone knows. It’s not about how to be a perfect producer — it’s about being a great planner. This person has a camera on his belt and now it’s time to film. All of a sudden you are like, ‘Okay, I have nothing to set up.’ Now I need to get it right.
What would you say is your style?
Music is my life.
How do you balance working in the music industry and maintaining your artistic integrity?
There are a lot of things in life we can learn from music. One of these things is always finding the right balance between artistic freedom and artistic integrity. That’s one thing I do very consciously. If something is important to me, but I don’t want something to offend people or get in the way of my creative process, I don’t put it out until I’m happy with it. I might change something with some lighting
