4k is the highest resolution 4K resolution, and the resolution has been increasing exponentially through the years, even being referred to as 4k by the name of the new specification, though, you can also see it referred as 4k by other names. 4k displays offer a pixel density of 4096×2160 which is an increase over the 1280×720 pixel resolution that we’ve come to expect from 4K TVs. 4k TV is the highest possible resolution resolution, so it has both the resolution of the screen, and the pixel count that makes it worthwhile to produce a 4:3 ratio of the signal. In fact, if you’re not a huge fan of seeing an image on a high-resolution screen as you’re watching a movie, then this is the TV you should be buying.

You can also get 4k content on the latest Blu-ray players, although, that’s also a higher resolution and requires more processing power and video compression. Most of the 1080p content on Blu-ray is already 4K resolution, so all you have to do is connect your system to your Blu-ray player which will offer a 4:3 ratio of the movie.

The next largest resolution for a television is 1080p, which has been around since 2009 and has been making a resurgence. 1080p is a higher resolution than 4k, but only slightly. It requires more processing power, and if you use an older TV which does not support 4k resolution, then you’re likely going to have to get into the 4k range again. That’s because even with 4k TV, you have to increase the resolution of your video cards to make them capable of handling full 4K at up to 70 FPS. You’ll be able to watch some 4k content, but only at lower resolutions at the same resolution. The only major exception to this rule is the Xbox One, which can only play 4k content at native 4K resolution up to 60 FPS.

There is no “recommended” resolution for a TV, but 1080p and above will probably be plenty for most people. The highest resolution on a 4k TV is 720p, which typically requires four times the processing power and video compression as the lowest resolution.
