A couple of years ago, I was a member of the local chapter of the National Organization for Marriage (nOM) and did not find many issues to care about personally.
But then the group’s leader Mike Stackpole began writing very detailed letters to members of the organization saying that the federal amendment banning same-sex marriage would be struck down soon – and that he believed the government should not force same-sex couples to marry. I was in his home on the day of the June 2012 hearing of the U.S. Supreme Court and saw firsthand why some of these people were so angry.
“In your letter to members of the Washington DC City Council I pointed out that the majority of Americans do not agree that same-sex couples should be legally married and that this ruling could lead to the federal government taking away federal recognition of same-sex marriage,” wrote Stackpole in the May 18, 2012 letter to NOM-Seattle chairman Robert Schuller. “You pointed out that this could affect many federal benefits, such as federal housing and Social Security and Medicare.” I thought this was a bit nuts. There was no way the federal government was going to take any of our right. And this was coming from a guy who claimed to have been on the board of the American Federation for Children and a founder of a national organization that is called the Coalition for Marriage, which has taken a stand against gay marriage for 25 years.
It was a few days later that Stackpole finally got around to telling me who he was talking to when he wrote this letter. It was Peter Montgomery, a member of the Washington DC
