The new law will allow the agency to fine companies up to $50,000 from a person who “knowingly employs an unlawful alien and causes, attempts to cause, conspires to cause or causes to be employed” by a non-resident “while in California.”

The bill passed by more than the 60 votes needed in both houses of the legislature needed over a two-year period, said agency spokesman Mark Fazio.

California became the latest state to address the issue of illegal immigration through a bill approved in 2016 that passed through the state Senate by a large margin of 53–1 over the Democratic-controlled Assembly.
