Most people make mistakes, and for good reason. This is a natural tendency, as our mind is the greatest source of creativity of the species. The key to learning to appreciate your own mistakes is learning how to look at them with a critical eye, recognizing when you make a mistake and how to avoid it in the future.
First: Look at it the same way you would when drawing. Look at it as a piece of art . Draw the lines the way you would if it were a physical object like a pencil on paper.
Second: The more you watch it, the more you’ll see the mistakes. Just like if you could take a good look at a drawing and analyze it, you can start seeing where your drawings fail, when they should be thriving.
Third: Be aware of what’s going on underneath what you’re drawing at all times. For example, if the lines are all flowing around, they should be like this:
If they’re not flowing around this way, they’re out of place.
If there are mistakes along the borders, they should be a little more refined and not be so large (like in this picture).
When you’re drawing to your own ideas to try different approaches, you can even draw a scene that is already in your head in much more precise detail. Remember, you have lots of time. Practice drawing to your own ideas to try different approaches.
Can’t I just draw with a brush and a pencil until I get good?
Yes, you can, but only if you’re not going to draw.
In order to truly perfect your drawing, you have to try different things, like drawing with a pencil, using a sketch pad, drawing with a computer, or even taking a drawing class.
To get good at drawing, you can’t do one thing or the other. Drawing is all about experimenting and experimenting, and it does take a lot of patience.
How can I get better at drawing?
There are lots of ways to prepare yourself before a major sketching session.
