AMY GOODMAN: We’re in New York City, and Democracy Now! is broadcasting live from the annual climate change summit at Citi Field.
This summit is being held this week on how to cut greenhouse gas emissions and avoid climate catastrophe. More than 700 world and national leaders are attending the conference, including Pope Francis, who is expected to say on Wednesday that global warming poses an “existential crisis” for people he deems to be the most vulnerable.
We’re also joined in NYC by the host of the program, our guest, Naomi Klein. She was a co-founder of Naomi Klein Books and is now the award-winning author of several books, including, most recently, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Naomi, welcome back to Democracy Now!
NAOMI KLEIN: Great to be here.
AMY GOODMAN: And we just heard the pope coming out and saying we can have this moment of crisis we’ve been watching, but we’re not going to be able to avoid, and now, of course, his statement in a video that has been shared by all of the world, saying that this is an existential crisis.
NAOMI KLEIN: Yes. The most important question, to take it the wrong way, this is not a crisis of the present. This is not a crisis of the immediate future. This is an existential crisis of the present, because what does that say about us? And when we ask is this a crisis right now—well, I think you want to know really, really what that means, because there it says that we can solve this in the short term, but in the sense of the future it becomes really frightening. And that’s what that really means, I think, it says that we can solve this, because it’s really not just about us. It’s about our own destruction. It’s about our own destruction, our own extinction. It’s not just about ourselves.
AMY GOODMAN: Can you talk more about the pope? He’s the first pope to ever come
