It’s a way of drawing with your fingers on paper. Every drawing is an experiment. You could start with a line and a circle and then try to make another line and a circle, and try to draw a triangle, and then change the line you have and the circle you have and the triangle you have and so on. It’s all about experimentation because you want to learn to do it right.
It’s hard to describe what an experiment is. For example, let’s say you get to the grocery store. I don’t know if you like the grocery store, I don’t know if you think it smells good. I don’t know if you like the prices. I don’t know if we should go there. There are lots of different opinions and lots and lots of questions. But that’s the point about experiments. The point is that you don’t know what’s right, whether it feels good or smells good or prices, but you’re trying to figure out what the best thing to do is. There are a lot of different experiments happening inside that line. That’s drawing. So basically, everything you do inside the point is drawing. Everything you see outside of that point is thinking — the thinking about what to do there, trying to figure out what makes you happy or feel happy or whatever. But really, you’re drawing with your hands, you’re drawing on a piece of paper. What’s fascinating is how the brain doesn’t know what that line is at all.
It’s funny, because when I first started drawing, in order for it to work at all, some of the things I was doing on screen were so different that it took me a while to figure out what I was doing. But eventually it dawned on me, and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, “Okay, this is actually drawing.” And when it comes into your life, it’s completely natural to look at it and say, “Well, that’s drawing. That’s an experiment.” And you think: Yes! I understand what I’m doing!
And then it sort of dawns on you that this isn’t drawing, it’s thought to be drawing, because you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to feel or think. Sometimes it seems to me like I’m actually trying to tell this story. But it turns out that thought is the basic process. A lot of the drawing is actually thought.
