This is a question I frequently get asked, so I’m sure most of you are thinking the same question. I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I should answer this question, or if I can answer it. However, there are several different things that can help me get more value out of my practice times and that also don’t detract from the value of my practice time.
It all depends on the type of pencil (i.e. lead type, weight, thickness, quality, etc.).
For the following example, I’ll be drawing a character while holding an old ballpoint pen I got in the late 90’s. My practice pencils I’ve used are the same type, and were just like the old ones.
After reviewing my current pencil for the past few months, I realized to just use the original ballpoint as it comes with a plastic case with a case grip which is very easy to use and put in whatever spot I want to draw. This doesn’t work very well for writing, so I changed to the pen with a ballpoint case that has a larger, more rubber grip. After using the two different types of ballpoint, I found that I can now draw with both type of pencils pretty much the same (without too much of a difference in sharpness because I’ve used a couple of different brands of ballpoint pen).
My writing practices have changed a bunch over the time that I’ve been doing this, and sometimes my drawing in particular. This made me realize that I now need to find the pencils that work well for my practice times. Since I’ve been using different types of pencil, I’ve been thinking that there are four different types of pencil. So this article is dedicated to how to choose and use them with each one. I’ll use these 4 types of pencils for my practice times.
1. Fine point pencils
Fine point is one of the easiest pencils to sharpen. I’ve used them as my pen since my toddler days. Now they’re very useful for writing, especially when doing small passages. Fine point pencils are fairly easy to use, and they’re usually the sharpest in their class. I don’t think that they are the most necessary, they do help out very much. For my practice times, I’ll be using the pencils I’ve described here.
Sharpening is another important pencil element to keep in mind when practicing
