Graphite, used primarily in pencils, is a yellowish-brown rock from which most of the world derives its mineral content. It also comes in various shades of brown, and the darker the shade (more like black or charcoal) the finer it is.
There are hundreds of different varieties and grades of graphite, with the most recognizable being graphite that occurs in the form of graphiteite oxides and graphite pyrites, some of the finest in the world. They are sometimes sold separately (as “gems” in graphite pencils), other times in a common, multicolor form. In this case, I have chosen to show the “yellowish brown” color of graphite oxides as representative of some common grades, and then show graphite pyrites as representative of others.

Graphite is very, very porous and will absorb a lot of moisture, especially during the early part of the writing portion of one’s paper, such as between paragraphs for copy-editing. It also has a tendency to separate, due to its resistance to deformation. In other words, it is porous and may be prone to tearing. Graphite may also lose its elastic properties for some reason. In my experience, the only significant problems I have had with a graphite-based pencil is if the pen or pencil tip has come into contact with the graphite during the writing or drawing portions of my paper. It can be remedied by either buffing the paper before writing it out (on the first few lines after the ink stops) or by taking out a section or two, or both. I don’t recommend this as a primary method. There are some good “no rubbing” books on the subject. Another suggestion is to dip the pencil or pen nib into a solvent before use or use a solvent that won’t cause corrosion. The best bet I have found for keeping the color of paper and other ingredients (such as ink, inks or other components that may be in contact with graphite) from absorbing into the graphite is to dip your pencil or pen nib in a very viscous solvent to prevent any build-up or leaching.
