The story of America’s largest natural gas production company is one of the most profitable in the company’s history. On Saturday, the company announced its third quarterly profit of $2.6 billion — an average profit of $1.7 billion — as its gas production climbed to a record and profits jumped to the highest level in more than a decade.

“This quarter is extremely positive for us,” said Robert Murray, the CEO. But he also sounded a note of caution, saying that he’s still assessing the company’s performance against the market and the state of the industry.

The company, which operates four natural gas processing plants in the Bakken oil region in North Dakota, announced a $1 billion operating adjustment this month to better reflect the company’s higher margins. In May, gas prices jumped more than 20 percent after rising on speculation that the pipeline from the Gulf of Mexico would not be completed.

The company’s total production was up 5 percent to 8.7 million million cubic feet per day from 2015 to 2016 in 2016. Overall revenue climbed to a record $17.9 billion from $16.5 billion in 2015 — a 14 percent jump.

But the price difference between oil and gas remains huge: The gas price in the United States is more than 50 percent higher than the oil price, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

But when my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of thirty-four, my parents felt they might not have him for much longer. My mother became a widow in 1982, after enduring more than sixty years of infertility. I had followed her
