I dance all day – and night!”
This song is a tribute to her “love at first sight” and, as the tune suggests, to the life-changing power of seeing others for the first time.
She recently said: “It’s very simple. I’m not dancing because I know that when I look at a woman I can’t help myself. I feel myself staring at her. It’s like when I’m on a bus and people are staring at me.
“Once you meet someone for the first time you can’t help yourself. I try not to act upon that but when I’m on stage it looks that way to me.
“But the thing I love most about dance is that there are people that look at me and say ‘Oh, you’re so cute, you look so beautiful’. People will stop and see you. If you’re not dancing it doesn’t feel as exciting. You are not going to get the best reaction.
“It’s nice and sexy and you just get people thinking ‘Wow, what a nice girl. So beautiful’. And of course a lot of that also comes from that person’s reaction.”
Fellow dancer Mavis Staples, who was in her teens when she first met Ms D’Angelo, said she had heard the words and thought: “That’s kind of fun”.
“We’re all dancing on stage and it’s a great feeling,” she said. “There’s nothing like it.”
Ms D’Angelo recently received an award from the Society of Dance on behalf of “all women in the world who are dancing to my music”.
“You have to make this world a better place,” she said of her work, adding she believed that “being a dancing, dancing person is important”.
She added: “The people in the world that are dancing to me are the ones who are going to be in my life when I’m old and sick. I want to inspire as many people as possible.”
