BEIJING (AP) — More than 300,000 dogs will soon be spared a grim fate.
The state-run newspaper People’s Daily on Tuesday published photos of a Chinese woman with five dogs and the news that the dogs will not be slaughtered for food.
The dogs have been vaccinated against rabies and their owners, who cannot afford rabies vaccine, are expected to care for them, state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
“After much consideration, we determined that an extra 5,000 dogs do not have to be slaughtered for food,” the paper quoted the owner of the dogs as saying.
Rabies and the rabies vaccine are prohibited to most dogs and cats who are not vaccinated. About one in 10 humans in China carry rabies.
In the photo on the right, the dog appears to sniff the air before laying down. The animal looks to be an affectionate pet but it’s not clear what that dog is, and how long it has been with the woman in the photo.
In the top photo, the woman is seen leaning against a tree. She is wearing jeans and a white shirt. A white ribbon is tied around her neck.
Many dog owners have said they cannot afford the rabies vaccine to ensure their animals are vaccinated against the virus. Many dogs must be vaccinated annually.
In its August 2011 issue, China Times reported that more than 1.5 million dogs had been killed every year since 2006 due to low prices.
The practice was blamed for the spread of infectious diseases including rabies in some parts of China, prompting the government to ban the killing of dogs for food, according to the news report.
China’s national legislature approved the dogs’ sale, but said it had to make some changes as the dog meat trade grew. The meat was sold in local markets, but the state-run
