Well, I’m sure that you’ve heard of the SEC rule, which says you have to trade in the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones index for at least a year, and at least five years of the last 10 years, both S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices, to earn any profit on the investment – even if the index itself goes down 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%. Of course, there are exceptions, and the first one of those exceptions would be the ones on Wall Street, where it’s not all about long term gain, there’s also that one-time loss which you sometimes have, but generally it’s a lot more simple. The SEC rule does apply to any stocks within the S&P 500, Dow Jones, or any index that you choose to hold for those purposes. Even if you invest within the S&P 500, it’s really very, very low cost to do this, which makes it a really good investment option, and also very easy.
But the one thing that you need to know is that you need at least a year, and it has to be at least five years. Also, if you are investing in the long term, you need at least five, and six of the last 10 years. This is a fact, it’s not an easy fact to remember but for this investment, you need to have five years, and a minimum of 10 years of the last 10 years. And the last one for five years is actually in the same business, right? There aren’t any investors in that business who are going to start investing right now. For example, they have no idea what’s going to happen in five years, right?
And for most stocks, you won’t be able to sell them right away, you need to be able to sell them within the next six months, and so you need to have at least six months. Some companies have it even longer because of some regulatory requirements. But this rule says you can’t just throw them away after six months. Therefore, if you are an individual who is buying an S&P 500 stock right off the bat and you buy this stock, it’s a good idea to have a couple of years, or even a year before your first investment in that position is made. And when your first investments in that position is made, you need to hold it for six month – so, I’ll give you one example, you probably don’t have that many options, maybe you have only one
