Yes it does. But I would like to see the statistics! Because I think there’s a lot of misinformation out there. For example, many people say ‘I only have to get a band removed to avoid getting acne’. That’s not true. The best protection against getting acne (and even many minor blemishes) is to have the band removed. If you think you won’t get the acne without the band then you wouldn’t want to get it removed.
What do I do when this happens to me?
There’s an easy fix: remove the band. I’ve been told this by my dermatologists and even my own doctors. I have removed a few of my tattoos to prevent more damage happening. The most important thing is to get an appointment. Sometimes after the first session you have to be on guard. Other times the doctor will say to wait for the results before you go back to the dentist. In any case they must get an appointment to give you a full picture of the condition (ex: the type of scars) and if there is any concern about an adverse reaction. They can also ask questions about why you want it removed.
What should I do if the tattoo disappears (or stays)?
Your results after a good tattoo removal will depend on a lot of factors including your skin type and the thickness of the tattoo. You will also need to take care of any scarring in the area you removed the band from. If they get bigger and worse you don’t have to worry about it. The best case scenario is if they stay as little as possible (less than 1/4 inch) but that’s a rare case and I’ve only ever seen it happen in guys who got an accident and weren’t wearing a band or who got it on their wrist after an accident. If it’s worse than that you should talk to a doctor.
If my scar has gone away how soon do I need to see a dermatologist?
Unfortunately many people who have to change their minds about getting a tattoo because of scarring are never offered good treatment. If you have a scar it doesn’t mean it won’t return. It’s just that scarring isn’t the only reason you want to get a tattoo. There’s a possibility that the surgery would make it worse (less than 2% chance) or that the healing process wouldn’t be as good (one in three cases). If it does end up worsening, the sooner you see your dermatologist the better.
